On Wednesday, May 25th, at the BMO Pavilion in Milwaukee, Peach Pit and Briston Maroney played a double headline show supported by BNNY.  Many fans braved the gloomy weather and came out for a great night of live music and dancing at this spacious lakefront venue, which is one of many stages on the Summerfest grounds.

BNNY, an indie pop band from Chicago, opened the show with their soft sound that reminded me of a cross between Cigarettes After Sex and Clairo. They played a new song live, which was a treat, and lead singer Jessica Viscius said, β€œβ€¦anything for Milwaukee”. Viscius spoke to the audience casually during the set, telling them that she often antiques in Milwaukee, and even asked if anyone would give her a ride to a listening party happening later that evening. BNNY’s chill and personable vibe carried through to their cover of β€œUndone - The Sweater Song” by Weezer. BNNY recently released a second album called One Million Love Songs and showcased their talent in their new work through a strong opening set.

Following BNNY was Briston Maroney, who put on a highly energetic show that included fog and immersive set pieces that make you feel like you’re in a woodsy setting.  Briston Maroney played a jam-packed set of indie rock songs, including the opening song the Meat Puppets-esque β€œReal Good Swimmer” and Cage The Elephant-y β€œSmall Talk”.  In the middle of his set, Briston Maroney slows things down by calming down the atmosphere with a simulated campfire.  He also had a cooler and threw out cans, including drinks like Diet Coke, into the crowd, which made me feel like we were all just hanging out at camp together.  This was the perfect segue into the song β€œLand of Light” where Maroney brought out his best friend Dougal Bain of Peach Pit to help with instrumental, dedicating the song to anyone who came to the show.  Following the slower part of the set, the audience was led through a guided meditation by a pre-recorded and otherworldly deep voice before the pace of the set picked back up with the heavier/upbeat song, β€œThe View”.  Towards the end of the set, Briston Maroney talked about how he played Summerfest back in 2018 and is currently touring his new album JIMMY, which is about finding out who you really are.  He closed the set by playing β€œBe Yourself” off of that album of the same name, plus his 2020 hit single β€œFreakin’ Out on the Interstate”.  Briston Maroney is an energetic performer who writes music that is easy to connect to and who knows how to command a stage.

At 9:00 pm, Peach Pit took the stage, opening with the title track from their new album Magpie, and hyped up the crowd with a headbanging-worthy performance.  This was the band's 2nd ever time playing in Milwaukee; the last time was in 2018, the same year that their first full-length album was released.  Peach Pit front man Neil Smith introduced the song β€œGive Up Baby Go” by asking the crowd if anyone had had 10 or 12 beers tonight.  He then opened up about how it has been 7 years since he last drank.  While talking, he noticed that an audience member in the pit was having a moment and possibly passing out.  Smith checked in with the audience member to make sure they were okay before saying that the next song was about β€œgetting fucked up” and dedicated it to β€œPassy Out McGoo”.  Peach Pit continued the show by playing some older songs from their album Being So Normal, including β€œAlrighty Aphrodite”, β€œPrivate Presley”, and the title track from the album.  Smith engaged with the audience again in a comedic way by saying that he likes to lock eyes with people in the audience who are singing the words so they get visibly flustered.  Peach Pit exited the stage after playing β€œPrivate Presley”, but shortly came back on for an encore.  Smith kicked off the encore by playing Peach Pit solo and telling the story behind how the band formed 10 years ago.  The band closed the show with the crowd favorite β€œTommy’s Party”.

These 3 artists' styles blended seamlessly for an entertaining evening of amazing music.  The β€œLong Hair, Long Life Tour” continues through June 26th in the United States and Canada.  I highly recommend catching this tour in a city near you before it wraps up.
